SMi’s powerful diagnostic platform
SMi’s technology provides unprecedented levels of resolution that can be adapted to any molecular target, enabling individual particles to be directly visualised and counted for the first time. This provides clinicians with unequivocal evidence of an infection and unprecedented information about the levels of infection.
Such an approach can be applied to a wide range of scenarios, including the detection of human or veterinary diseases such as genetic disorders and cancers. It is even possible to detect contaminants in foods, the environment or manufactured products.
Extremely rapid detection
Seconds per sample – for disease diagnosis, this compares to several minutes or hours for less accurate lateral flow tests and PCR tests.
Very high throughput
Up to 384 samples to be processed in just minutes - this is a game changer for applications such as the mass screening of patient samples in a healthcare setting, or the screening of drug candidates by biomedical researchers.
Very high sensitivity
The system visualises individual particles - for infections it is possible to simultaneously detect microbial genomes and their proteins, providing an unprecedented sensitivity that allows detection much earlier than existing approaches.
Low cost per unit test
Dramatically cheaper than other systems – for diagnosis it is much cheaper than the costs of PCR.
Fully automated system
Routinely used with simple training - meaning it is accessible to a wide range of professionals.
Multiplexed platform
Allowing the simultaneous detection of several targets - such as microbes and host antibodies, or a panel of diseases with similar symptoms.
Simple operation
Operation of the device is simple. Samples are placed upon optical chips that are provided in the 96 and 384 well formats that are widely used in clinical and research laboratories.
One platform to quantify different target molecules
SMi offers multi-omics, enabling the use of a single platform to detect different types of molecule – DNA, RNA, protein or inorganic molecules.
Assays are provided in formats tailored to enable the creation of user-defined panels, or from a selection of predefined panels. It is also possible to add your own molecules to a predefined panel, ensuring that your experimental controls and unknowns are present in the same analysis.
Rapid results
For disease diagnosis, it is the ability to provide simultaneous and near-instant results for multiple diseases within the same sample and to detect low-level infection at an early stage that fundamentally distinguishes this technology from others.
SMi's diagnostic device can visualise single molecules in real time, providing irrefutable evidence of the existence of disease-associated particles, without the need for the long and error-prone signal amplification steps that are often needed with techniques such as PCR. This dramatically reduces testing times and increases the reliability of the test results.
Ease of use
SMi’s platform was designed in consultation with researchers and diagnostic labs. We listened to what they wanted, and the result was a requirement for minimal hands-on time combined with rich and reliable information.
This has resulted in an instrument that requires little user training, simplifies experimental design, and has low reagent waste and plastics usage. This is combined with SMi’s deep learning augmented single molecule analytics and simplify data interpretation.
